HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A motorcyclist was killed in a bizarre hit-and-run accident after crashing into construction equipment that was allegedly stolen from a nearby job site, according to the Houston Police Department.
Officials say the accident happened early Sunday morning off Interstate 249 near Greens Road.
According to Sgt. Michael Barrow of HPD The motorcyclist crashed into the back of a stolen backhoe that officers believe was taken from a nearby construction site.
Barrow said that the person who was driving the excavator moved it off the road to a grassy area, then left the place and abandoned the excavator.
HPD is investigating and trying to identify the motorcyclist. The backhoe driver will be charged with failure to stop and render aid, among other charges, they said.
Houston Transtar said all major inbound lanes were closed while HPD investigated the crash, but the road was reopened just before 5 a.m.
