Man charged in Lowell hit-and-run that killed woman, 29

A Lowell man faces felony charges after he struck and killed a pedestrian, then fled the scene Sunday.

Prosecutors said that Guilherme Candido (23 years old) surrendered himself to the authorities on Tuesday evening after an arrest warrant was issued for him.

Candido is charged with one felony count of leaving the scene of personal injury and death after a fatal accident, the office of Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lowell Police Director Gregory Houdon said in a news release.

Candido has pleaded not guilty to all charges, court records show.

On the night of May 24, police were notified that a pedestrian had been injured on Pawtucket Street in Lowell, officials said.

Police found a 29-year-old woman on the road. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she died of her injuries, officials said.

Using footage from surveillance cameras and FLOCK cameras, police identified Candido as the alleged driver of the Ford Explorer that struck the woman, officials said.

Candido is being held on a $7,500 cash bond. If he posts bail, he will have to wear a GPS monitoring device and cannot drive a car, court records show. He also must surrender his passport, court records show.

Court records show ICE will detain Candido after his criminal case concludes.

Candido is scheduled to appear in court June 25 for a probable cause hearing, court records show.

Candido’s attorney did not respond to a request for comment Thursday night.
