Emma Raducanu Shares Health Update After Scary Retirement in Wuhan Amid Brutal Heat

After a worrying on-court moment at the Wuhan Open, Emma Raducanu has reassured fans that she’s doing fine. The 2021 US Open champion had to retire midway through her first-round match against Ann Li, struggling with the intense heat that swept through the tournament.

Why Have Rising Temperatures Become a Major Concern for Players in Wuhan?

The Wuhan Open, a key stop on the WTA’s China swing, has been marked by soaring temperatures and oppressive humidity. Players have been battling sweltering conditions throughout the week, with the mercury climbing to nearly 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

The combination of heat and humidity prompted tournament organizers to suspend play on the outer courts temporarily while matches continued under the closed roof on Center Court. Several players have taken to social media to express how unbearable the weather has been.

Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu posted an Instagram story wringing out her sweat-soaked sock after practice. At the same time, world No. 2 Iga Świątek shared a drenched T-shirt video captioned “hot,” capturing how grueling the environment has been. Jelena Ostapenko, who also retired from her match against Sorana Cirstea, said on social media that she had suffered a heat stroke during her time on court.

What Update Did Emma Raducanu Share After Her Health Scare?

Raducanu hinted at the tough conditions before stepping onto the court, sharing a screenshot of Wuhan’s weather forecast on Threads with a knowing caption about the brutal temperatures. Her match against Li proved just how severe the heat had become.

The 22-year-old appeared increasingly unwell as the second set unfolded, looking dizzy and fatigued during changeovers and often slumping in her chair. The medical team was called to monitor her blood pressure and temperature before she ultimately decided she could no longer continue. Li was declared the winner, leading 6-1, 4-1 when Raducanu retired.

A few days later, Raducanu took to Threads to provide a long-awaited update to her followers. She posted a photo of herself sitting on a hospital bed in Wuhan, dressed casually in a hoodie and dark sunglasses, accompanied by a reassuring caption: “Last day at the doctors in Wuhan. Feeling better now. Shame I couldn’t continue there, but thank you for the messages.”
