Egypt launched a new transit service to transport goods from Europe to the Gulf countries via the port of Damietta, according to a Ministry of Transport statement on Monday, March 30. The service will handle refrigerated and dry goods coming from Europe via the sea shipping line linking the port of Damietta to the city of Trieste in Italy, before transporting them to the port of Safaga and then to Gulf destinations. The move is part of Egypt’s broader strategy to position itself as a regional hub for transport, logistics and transit trade. Officials said that the new model aims to simplify the movement of goods by reducing procedural requirements, including exempting transit shipments destined for Gulf countries from prior registration in the Automated Cargo Information (ACI) system. The authorities said that coordination between the Damietta Port Authority, ro-ro line operator Pan Marine Group, customs officials and other stakeholders helped speed up operation and clearance procedures through the use of digital systems.
