Chia seeds sold by Amazon, Whole Foods recalled over salmonella risk

(NEXSTAR) – “Superfoods” sold nationwide are being recalled due to the risk of salmonella contamination.

California-based Navitas Organics is recalling certain eight-ounce packages of organic chia seeds after its supplier notified the company of the recall.

The seeds, which are advertised on produce bags as a “plant-based superfood,” have been sold online by retailers including Amazon, and at Whole Foods and other retailers across the country.

The recall includes standing pouches containing UPC 858847000284 with the following lot codes listed above the nutritional information:

  • W31025283 – Best if used by: End of April 2027
  • W31025286 – Best if used by: End of April 2027
  • W31025287 – Best if used by: End of April 2027
  • W31025311 – Best if used by: End of May 2027
  • W31025314 – Best if used by: End of May 2027
  • W31025315 – Best if used by: End of May 2027
  • W31025316 – Best if used by: End of May 2027
  • W31025317 – Best if used by: End of May 2027

The recall was done as a precaution, and the FDA had not reported any illnesses or medical events associated with the product as of Wednesday.

“Navitas has been providing organic chia seeds to our customers for more than 20 years. Providing safe, healthy food to our customers is why we’ve been in business as long as we have and that’s why we’re recalling this product today,” Navitas CEO Ira Haber said in a statement.

Salmonella bacteria are a leading cause of infections in the United States, and can cause serious illness or death among young children, adults over 65 and people with weakened immune systems, according to the World Health Organization. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Center for Disease Control).

The most common ways to become infected with salmonella include eating contaminated foods; Drinking or coming into contact with contaminated water; Touching animals, animal feces and the environment in which they live.

Symptoms usually include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
