Cape Verde stuns Spain with a surprising 0-0 draw in the country’s World Cup debut

The small Cape Verdean side achieved a stunning result in their first appearance at the World Cup finals, eliminating heavy favorites Spain.

An impressive performance by 40-year-old goalkeeper Fosenha helped Cape Verde play out one of the tournament favorites to a shock 0-0 draw. The final result is the biggest shock of the tournament so far, with Spain being -1200 favorites to win the match by some bookmakers.

Spain midfielder Rodri said: “The team tried. “It’s about improving those chances we create because against a team that goes down a lot, you don’t have many, and you know you have to take them. It’s that simple.”

Cape Verde had the opportunity to win the match, but Denny Borges’ late header was blocked by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon.

European champion Spain’s roster is full of star players. But they were left frustrated by Cape Verde, with Fosinha making a string of saves before half-time.

Barcelona striker Ferran Torres was the closest to scoring for Spain, as she hit the crossbar with a shot and was later forced to save a ball from her two winners.

Goalkeeper Pedri also denied another potential result late in the first half.

Cape Verde, a group of islands with a population of about half a million, is playing in the World Cup finals for the first time.

2010 champions Spain are bidding to win their second World Cup, but coach Luis de la Fuente warned on Sunday that Cape Verde could be one of the surprise teams in the tournament.

Cape Verde continued to defend stubbornly in the second half, and even young star Lamine Yamal was unable to turn the match in favor of Spain after entering the match.
