PASADENA, Texas (KTRK) – Smoke billowed over Bayport on Wednesday afternoon after chemical plant operations led to an unexpected ignition, according to LyondellBasell.

SkyEye was above the thick smoke that billowed over the Bayport area. The effects of the flame were visible for miles over Pasadena and the surrounding area.

SkyEye was above the scene. A thick column of smoke rose from the fires into the sky.

The chemical company said its Pasadena plant, located on Bay Area Boulevard, experienced “operating conditions” that “set the facility on fire.”

Lyondell Basil said an incinerator is a safety and environmental control device used to manage and burn processed materials.

The community may notice a bright glow, smoke or a rumbling noise as the incident occurs, but there is no threat to the surrounding area, company officials said.

LyondellBasell confirmed that it is working to stop gas flaring as quickly and safely as possible, adding that its focus is on “reducing inconvenience and protecting the safety of the community, environment, and employees.”

The operational condition that led to the fire was not immediately known.
