MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — From backyard barbecues to fireworks displays, Fourth of July traditions are on full display across America on its 250th birthday.
While the celebration may only last a few minutes in the sky, officials said the cleanup afterward is just as important.
“Always keep your water source nearby, such as a garden hose or a bucket of water. When you’re done, douse all fireworks with water and dispose of them along with all small debris,” said Sue Davis, spokeswoman for Top Dog Fireworks.
Improperly disposed of fireworks can remain hot long after they appear, creating a hidden fire hazard, officials said.
“Don’t put it in the trash, put a lid on it and stick it in your garage and close the door because it can still be hot and can cause a fire,” Davis said.
This warning also came after the Montgomery County Fire Office shared photos of a truck and house fire Friday evening.

Residents reported that after setting off the fireworks, they placed the debris in the bed of their truck, officials said. Investigators said the fireworks later ignited again, starting a fire that spread.
When it comes to safely disposing of used fireworks, fire officials recommend soaking them in a bucket of water for at least 15 minutes.
For unused fireworks, officials recommend soaking fireworks for at least 12 hours.
Next, seal the debris in a plastic bag to keep it moist, then place the bag away from your home, garage, or other buildings.
“Put the fireworks in the trash, but only roll the can a few feet down the driveway. Don’t put them against a building or inside your garage,” Davis said.
