san francisco — The NBA postponed Saturday’s game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors in Minneapolis amid growing unrest after a Saturday morning standoff with federal immigration officers ended with a man being shot and killed.
The league said in a statement that the game was postponed “to prioritize the safety and security of the Minneapolis community.”
The league plans to play the game on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET. The Warriors and Timberwolves are also scheduled to play again in downtown Minneapolis on Monday night.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said a 37-year-old man was killed in the shooting on Saturday, but declined to reveal his identity. He added that information about the reasons that led to the shooting is limited.
The officer who shot the man is an eight-year veteran of the Border Patrol, according to federal officials.

Thousands marched through downtown Minneapolis on Friday afternoon, demanding an end to the ongoing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement process in the state. The widespread protests passed the Target Center and the Warriors’ team hotel downtown.
The shooting occurred Saturday morning about two miles south of the plaza, sparking another round of local citizen protests.
In 2020, NBA playoff games that were being played in the “bubble” at Walt Disney World in Florida were postponed after players chose to boycott following the shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin. The games resumed three days later.
Saturday’s game was scheduled to be broadcast on ABC. The rescheduled game is scheduled to air Sunday on NBA TV.
