Some in Red Sox organization ‘questioning’ Anthony, Mayer

The Red Sox are the most exciting team in baseball, and whether by coincidence or not, their success has occurred in the absence of their young stars, Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer.

Anthony has been out since the beginning of May. Mayer’s injury was recent, but he had not been playing well in the weeks leading up to the injury.

Now they’re both out of the lineup, and a few veterans He made comments On how the Red Sox can be more focused, on and off the field, during this stretch.

Does this have anything to do with Anthony and Mayer? Maybe not. But according to MassLive’s Sean McAdam, at least some members of the organization are monitoring the situation.

“I find it hard to believe that there aren’t at least questions about both of them,” McAdam said He said on 98.5 The Sports Hub. “I’m not sure how deep and grounded these questions are. But I know enough people are asking these questions.”

For what it’s worth, Boston’s interim manager, Chad Tracy, quickly shot down any concerns with Meyer and Anthony off the field.

“Not even remotely on my radar. We haven’t even talked about anything here,” Tracy said. “I’ve tried to say it here publicly the last couple of days. I know this is getting a lot of attention. Roman in particular, as I’ve said publicly: I want Roman to be healthy and I want Roman back. Roman is a great baseball player. He’s a hell of a hitter. He can help us. But, he’s a hell of a hitter with two hands. Not one. So, we’ve got to get him healthy.”

Anthony and Meyer were two of the biggest prospects in recent Red Sox memory, and both had promising starts to their MLB careers in 2025. But neither had the kind of second year they were likely hoping for, injuries or not.

Now that Boston is starting to iterate on its current lineup, it might be worth asking how much value there is in keeping this current lineup as consistent as possible heading into the final months of the season. But if Anthony were willing to return for the playoffs, it’s hard to imagine the Red Sox would have any resistance to that.
