AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas quarterback Arch Manning left the game after suffering a hard hit on Game 1 of overtime in the Longhorns’ 45-38 win over Mississippi State on Saturday.
Manning’s head hit the field after the tackle and he was helped off the field. Texans coach Steve Sarkisian said in the postgame press conference that he did not have an update on the quarterback’s condition.
“We’ll find out more when we get back to Austin,” he said.
Manning decided to tuck the ball and run when he couldn’t find an open receiver, and he had some open space in the middle of the field. Two Mississippi State defenders, Isaac Smith and Kedrick Bingley-Jones, came close for the stop, with Smith making the first contact that sent Manning flying.
Bingley Jones then hit Manning from behind, causing Manning’s head to bounce off the turf at Davis Wade Stadium. Manning stayed on the ground. Offensive lineman Brandon Baker tried to help Manning back to his feet, but fell again when medical staff rushed to his aid.
Manning was helped off the field by two members of the medical team and taken to the injury tent on the sideline. Backup Matthew Caldwell came up for two plays and completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Emmett Mosley V for the go-ahead touchdown.
Sarkisian will meet with reporters on Monday for his weekly news conference, so an update could come after that.
