As Scots continue to sip beer in Boston while celebrating the World Cup this month, a pair of Patriots legends have returned to the Commonwealth to take part in the festivities.
Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski are certainly no strangers to the party atmosphere of Boston and Foxboro. The Patriots legends won three Super Bowls in New England, followed by three huge performances across town.
They compared this week’s World Cup party to their iconic celebration after Super Bowl 49, the pair’s first championship parade.
“We heard they drank Boston under the table,” Edelman said.
“This is the second time in 12 years that Boston has gone dry,” Gronkowski added. “Congratulations to the Scottish Army, the Tartan Army, they’re absolutely fantastic. They’re trash, but they have a respectable dirty fan base, they’re great people.”
Both Edelman and Gronkowski are NFL analysts on FOX, the same network that is broadcasting this year’s World Cup, so it made sense to bring the fan favorite back to Boston for coverage.
The Boston Common Fan Fest has given fans – most of whom are Scottish – an alternative way to watch Scotland’s match against Morocco without attending Foxborough. The event was a huge success, attracting a crowd of nearly 15,000 fans.
Pubs in Boston haven’t been able to keep up with the rise in beer consumption, with multiple places running out of some or all of their beer selections courtesy of thirsty Scots.
Edelman and Gronkowski did not report on the event either. They participated in it. Edelman was seen marching with the Tartan Army, wearing face paint and a kilt to match the Scottish march. Gronkowski followed suit, posing for plenty of photos with fans along the way.
The Scots will be hoping for a win on Friday to secure a place in the knockout stages of the tournament. The kickoff match against Morocco will kick off at 6 p.m. ET.
