Dylan Larkin may not stay in a Red Wings uniform much longer.
Larkin asked out of Detroit as issues continued to mount between him and Red Wings management after the team missed the postseason for the 10th straight season.
The 29-year-old center and U.S. Olympic gold medalist is in the middle of a long-term deal that will average $8.7 million per year through the 2030-31 season. He also has a no-trade clause for the next two seasons, meaning his control of the situation will not change on July 1.
Larkin was taken 15th overall by the Red Wings in 2014, and has developed into a major offensive contributor for the team, scoring 30 or more goals in each of the past five seasons. His 34 goals this season tied for 25th in the league.
During his 11 years in the Motor City, Larkin scored 276 goals and 643 points in 808 games. He also appeared in the 2016, 2022 and 2023 All-Star Games.
Despite his success, Larkin has played the full 82 games in his career just twice due to injuries, including a lower-body injury that sidelined him for two weeks this year.
While Detroit made the playoffs in Larkin’s first season, they lost in the first round and haven’t been back since.
That’s not to say the Red Wings aren’t close to punching their ticket to the postseason with Larkin.
On January 24 of this season, Detroit was tied for first place in the Eastern Conference and had a 12-point lead for a playoff spot before collapsing late and finishing 41-31-10 and sixth in the Atlantic Division.
Larkin has also publicly criticized Red Wings management At the 2025 trade deadline to see how inactive they are during the playoffs. Then-Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman denied rumors of a rift between Larkin and the team.
