The trial of accused serial rapist Alvin Campbell Jr. will begin Monday with opening statements as attorneys present issues of Campbell’s guilt or innocence.

Prosecutors say Campbell, the older brother of Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, sexually assaulted nine women between 2017 and 2019, often posing as a rental car driver to target women leaving Boston bars.

Campbell, now 45, has pleaded not guilty to a string of rape, kidnapping, indecent assault and battery, among other charges.

Monday’s opening statements have been several years in the making; Campbell’s case has been postponed several times since his initial arrest in January 2020.

Attorney General Andrea Campbell said last week that she was “praying for the survivors and all those affected” as her brother’s trial began.

She added: “This is an extremely difficult situation for everyone involved, and I carry this burden with me, including in my prayers for my brother.” He added: “The case is now before the court, and I respect the judicial process as it moves forward.”
