For all the flaws of the 2026 Red Sox team, Payton Tull is not one of them at all.
The young starter threw seven scoreless innings against the Yankees on Friday, striking out seven batters and allowing just one hit. He came off the mound to a standing ovation from the Fenway Park crowd in a dominant outing.
He carried a perfect no-hit pitch into the sixth inning before giving up that first and only hit.
“I was definitely thinking about it in that fifth game,” Toole said after the game. “Whoever says when they throw a perfect game or a miss, and they say ‘I didn’t think about it until nine,’ that’s a whole lot of bull crap. They’re completely overthinking it.”
After the match, Toole admitted he was suffering from an illness, but he started anyway, dominating every half.
“I just felt, this morning and a little bit yesterday, body pain, fever, my head felt good… but I lay in bed for a long time this morning,” Toll told reporters. “I came here, I got some DayQuil in me, [but] I think that’s why I hit the wall so hard in the seventh round. Just don’t sleep well.
Toole got his footing as a starter late last season with varying levels of success, but he’s stepped up his game this year and proven he’s capable of carving out a permanent spot in Boston’s starting rotation for years to come. His pitching arsenal is not yet extensive, but the pitches he goes to are very effective.
Tulle He has a 2.78 ERA across 12 starts This season, including Friday’s win. He’s become quite the Yankee killer, throwing 18 strikeouts and allowing just one run and four hits during his outing against New York this year.
“It’s one of the best rivalries in sports. No matter what happens in the season, this is still a great series,” Tull said of this Yankees series. “I was able to get out there and enjoy it a lot.”
Thanks to Tull’s mediocre efforts, Boston found itself up 2-0 in a four-game series against the Yankees at Fenway Park. Jake Bennett will get the upset on Saturday afternoon, and Sonny Gray will get the nod for Sunday Night Baseball on NBC.
