Among the unexpected faces at the World Cup opener was Elmo, who joined Cookie Monster on FOX’s pregame show and told Charissa Thompson, “It’s really amazing. Everyone’s been really nice and taught us about soccer.”

Thompson also asked Elmo and Cookie Monster what advice they would give the United States as it opened its World Cup campaign. Elmo kept it simple: “Do your best.”

After the disastrous failure of the US Men’s National Team (USMNT) to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, the team made two consecutive World Cup appearances.

In the last tournament in Qatar, the United States was eliminated in the round of 16 by the Netherlands, but with their start on home soil, expectations are higher for this new generation of players under coach Mauricio Pochettino.
