Shams Charania Reveals LeBron James’ Stance as Questions Linger About His Future in LA

Speaking on ESPN, Charania provided an update on where James stands regarding retirement and his future with the Lakers.

“I think LeBron in his mind he is finishing this season in LA… he’s got a no trade clause,” Charania said. “There is people in LeBron circle that do believe he is going to go one more year. If he does there is definitely chatter of where that could be. Could that be in Cleveland? could that be in LA, so that’s up for debate for sure, but right now LeBron’s mindset is locked in on this Lakers team.”

The comments clarify that, despite ongoing leaguewide discussion, James is not focused on a midseason exit and remains committed to the Lakers for the remainder of the year.

James is currently in his 23rd NBA season, the longest career in league history, and is 41 years old. He opted into his $52.6 million player option last summer to remain in Los Angeles but did not receive a contract extension from the Lakers.

The four-time NBA champion joined the Lakers as a free agent in the summer of 2018 and is now in his eighth season with the franchise. He helped lead Los Angeles to its first championship in more than a decade during the 2020 season.

During a previous appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Charania added further context about the state of the relationship between James and the organization.

“The reality is here, what we’re having right now, this is an end of a relationship in terms of LeBron James and the Lakers,” Charania said.

According to reporting from ESPN’s Baxter Holmes, Lakers governor Jeanie Buss has grown frustrated with James, citing concerns about his ego and the level of influence he and Klutch Sports have attempted to exert within the organization.

Holmes reported that those frustrations led Buss to privately contemplate trading James in 2022, one year after the failed Russell Westbrook trade, a move James was believed to have supported.

With Luka Dončić now the forefront of the Lakers’ long-term plans, James is taking a reduced role in shaping the team’s direction.

James is on an expiring contract, with no extension in place, leaving open the possibility that he could hit free agency and play elsewhere in the 2026–27 campaign.

Cavaliers Ready to Bring Back James to Cleveland

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers host James and the Lakers on Wednesday, Jan. 28, during Los Angeles’ annual trip to Cleveland, games that routinely draw attention given James’ history with the franchise.

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, a return to Cleveland remains a possibility for The King.

“Multiple team and league sources told ESPN the Cavaliers would gladly welcome James back this summer if he wanted to return to Cleveland for his 24th NBA season and third stint with the team,” McMenamin reported.

For now, Charania’s reporting indicates James remains locked in on the Lakers, even as questions persist about how and where his historic career will conclude.
