New York Governor Kathy Hochul Announce Nearly three million residents will get some much-needed relief this summer.
New York’s School Tax Credit Program – also known as STAR – provides property tax breaks to eligible homeowners and seniors statewide at their primary residence. The $2 billion program aims to reduce school property taxes.
Most Gothamians with incomes under $500,000 will receive money between $350 and $600. Seniors will see higher checks as many with incomes under $110,750 can expect between $700 to $1,500.
Some STAR recipients will get their money in the form of a tax credit this year, while others will receive a tax credit that will be sent via a check in the mail this summer and fall.
“The beginning of summer is also the beginning of STAR tax credit season for millions of New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said. “From tax credits and energy rebates to expanded child tax credits and middle-class tax cuts, we continue to put more money back into New Yorkers’ pockets.”
Fear not, all eligible homeowners who sign up for the STAR program will receive checks before the deadline to pay their school taxes. Parts of the state — including New York City, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse — have school tax due dates in late June and July.
There are two ways to claim your money. If you’re registered for the credit, the IRS will issue your benefit by check or direct deposit — and you can use it to pay your school taxes.
You can also get the credit if you own your home and it is your primary residence, consistent with the income levels listed above.

To secure your STAR credit via direct deposit this year, sign up as soon as possible. The governor encourages you to sign up at least 15 business days before your local school tax due date.
Starting July 7, New Yorkers can get a little extra help if needed as the IRS holds regional STAR seminars. The sessions will teach people how to sign up for the program and maximize the benefits. The first hearing will be in Erie County.
Residents can Check the delivery schedule Shows the date it will be mailed. Just allow five to 10 business days for delivery. No specific date will be set, just a general timeline.
