Adam Orman and Fiore Tedesco III, co-owners of L’Oca d’Oro, introduced the unique payment model, officially called “PWYW,” at their Austin hotspot.
The weekly special is a dining experience designed to bring more Austinites to the table, regardless of whether their budgets are full service or otherwise, according to the restaurant’s website.
The owners said they hope the promotion will help locals endure the sting of inflation and rising food costs while still enjoying a quality night out at the restaurants. Local outlet KUT Austin.
“We want to make the great L’Oca d’Oro experience accessible to anyone in Austin,” the restaurant’s website said.
From 4pm to 9:30pm on Tuesday, lucky guests can enjoy dishes ranging from wagyu brisket and heritage pork balls to tiramisu and cannoli.
Pasta lovers can also turn their forks to fresh favorites alongside focaccia and mozzarella.
“At the end of the meal, diners will receive the actual check but are invited to write down the amount they would like to pay for the food,” the website explains, though drinks are not included in the offer.
The idea seems to be paying off. Some customers have volunteered to pay more on their bill to help cover diners who pay less.
“If a guest wants to pay more than the cost of the meal to help support people who choose to pay less, they are welcome to do so,” the website said.
“We know there are a lot of people in Austin — hospitality workers, teachers, health care workers — who help make this city great but can’t always afford to eat out at places like L’Oca d’Oro,” Orman said in a statement linked to the restaurant’s GoFundMe campaign.
“We don’t like that. So we set aside one night a week where everyone can enjoy the full L’Oca d’Oro experience on their own terms.”
So eat in – kindness is always on the menu.
