HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A man was found dead after firefighters extinguished a fire at a home that was for sale, the Houston Fire Department said.

HFD said it responded to a house fire on Southmont Street in the South Park area around 3 a.m. Saturday.

According to investigators, firefighters quickly put out the fire and found a man inside who had died before their arrival.

Photos from the scene showed a “For Sale” sign on the lawn, and officials confirmed that no one was staying there at the time.

HFD said the man who died may have been a squatter because they contacted the homeowner, who said they were not aware anyone was there.
