New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani embarrassingly misspelled the veteran NYPD officer who was shot in the back this weekend — despite announcing that he had just visited the father of three in the hospital.
Hizzoner misspelled Detective Robert Carroll’s last name three times in a social media post, misspelling the veteran officer’s name as “Carroll.”
“Early this morning in Crown Heights, Detective Robert Carroll was shot in the line of duty. I visited Detective Carroll in the hospital today, and I am grateful for his bulletproof vest that protected him from more serious injury. I will keep him and his loved ones in my thoughts as he recovers,” Mamdani said. Posted in X on Sunday afternoon.
“I am grateful to Detective Carroll and every member of the NYPD who are working to keep New Yorkers safe during this busy weekend,” Mamdani added.
Mamdani, who has previously called for defunding the police, recently surprised department and city lawmakers with his eleventh-hour move to eliminate about 600 planned new officers.
Just weeks ago, Mamdani announced he would hire 580 more officers — which angered Democratic Socialists’ allies because he broke a campaign promise to freeze the NYPD’s headcount at 35,000 cops.
The reduction comes as the already weakened force faces a massive workload in the summer, with officers working 12-hour shifts due to World Cup tourism, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding, and the Independence Day holiday.
Carroll, a married father of three who was scheduled to retire in just 10 days, was shot in the back early Sunday morning by an 18-year-old gunman as he and other officers sat in an unmarked police car in Brooklyn.
Carroll was shot in the upper back, but he was wearing his ballistic vest and miraculously suffered only minor injuries, police said. The suspect fled on foot but was quickly apprehended several blocks away after a dramatic foot chase.
