Jahmai Jones didn’t stay in Boston long, but he made a first impression.
On Saturday night, in only his second appearance as a member of the Red Sox, Jones launched his first home run with the club. It was a fitting way to make his debut in front of his hometown crowd at Fenway Park, as he sent one soaring over the Green Monster to tie the score at 2-2 in Boston.
Jones was brought to the Red Sox via trade. He would have the potential to be a deep and useful option, but since Boston played 3 games in just over 24 hours, they needed all hands on deck for their weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Jones detailed the value of that moment after the game.
“To be able to do it here with this team, the way they play, it’s awesome,” Jones told reporters. “It feels great to keep passing the baton on and keep playing the type of baseball they play.
“It feels great to have that crowd behind you.”
Jones has been in the MLB since 2020, but it’s been a bit of a rocky road for the outfielder. In 2026, he struggled mightily with the Tigers before being sent to Boston. for him The batting average is a modest 0.135and had recorded just 7 RBIs all season before Saturday.
Perhaps a fresh start is all Jones needs to get back on track with his major league career. He showed a lot of promise with the Tigers in 2025, batting .287 with 23 RBIs and seven home runs.
Jones also gives Boston some help against southpaw pitchers. All 11 of his MLB career hits have come out of left field.
No matter what his future holds in Boston, he already has a special moment with the Fenway fans to hang his hat on.
