So far this summer, Dianna Russini has been among the biggest topics of conversation in the entire sports world. Her scandal with Mike Vrabel caught everyone’s attention, but even after their alleged relationship got exposed, the hits keep on coming.
However, the media has remained largely quiet on the matter, with barely any references or discussion of the ordeal until her former employer’s deep dive. One podcaster, though, didn’t take too kindly to The Athletic’s handling of the situation.
Podcaster Believes Dianna Russini Is Being Scapegoated by the Athletic
The entire scenario came to light when pictures of Russini with the New England Patriots head coach leaked from a resort in Arizona. Since then, many details have come to light about the pair.
From past interviews to Spotify playlists, errant comments, and a long history that has become a social media fascination, the two have been extensively linked. As a result, Russini had to step down from her role at The Athletic.
At the same time, Vrabel admitted to some tough conversations with his family and the Patriots organization before stepping away from the team during the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft to enter counseling.

Russini, though, was away from the public limelight for the most part since the story came to light. Now, The New York Times recently released a thorough breakdown of the situation, one that Tony Farmer believes is their attempt to wash their hands of the matter.
Bringing to light a particular story involving a traffic stop, Russini claimed that she’d walked away from the encounter after using her NFL sources to put the cop in direct contact with his favorite team’s head coach.
Unfortunately, Farmer wasn’t willing to accept the publication’s claims about the situation. “My question for you today is this. If that story took place, do you really think that was Dianna Russini’s first time telling that story? You don’t think she told her colleagues about that? You don’t think she told her friends about it? It’s a good story.”
As a result, he pointed out where The New York Times wasn’t being entirely honest. “The New York Times in their article says, ‘We had no idea about this until really recently because Dianna didn’t follow protocol. We told Dianna she’s supposed to let us know when she’s doing these appearances, and Dianna didn’t follow the protocol, so we had no idea.’”
Explaining his rationale, Farmer claimed, “I don’t believe that for a second. I don’t believe that for a second because that would require Dianna not telling this story to her colleagues.”
“That would require, even if she didn’t tell the story to her colleagues, they didn’t see this very public podcast on their own and start talking about it on the water cooler or talking about it on their group chats,” he continued. “I don’t believe The New York Times is hearing this story for the first time. I think they’re pretending to hear this story for the first time. In other words, I think The New York Times is playing dumb. I think The Athletic, which is owned by The New York Times, is playing dumb.”

His explanation stemmed from the company being lenient with one of their biggest voices and a veteran in the sports media landscape. However, in light of recent events, the team wanted to cut all contact with her.
As a result, he concluded, “The Athletic had sort of a relaxed, laid back relationship with Dianna Russini, and they trusted her to do these appearances without letting them know. But now that Dianna Russini has gotten in a little bit of hot water, they don’t want to be connected to that hot water. So they create the appearance that Dianna Russini went rogue. I don’t think Dianna Russini went rogue. I think that The New York Times and The Athletic are setting her up to be a scapegoat.”
So far, the words from the massive piece on Russini seem to be the final nail in the coffin of this entire exchange. But with internet sleuths still hard at work on the matter, more layers could get revealed in due time.
Moreover, the veteran reporter hasn’t revealed her side of the story fully yet. If she eventually breaks her silence, it could shed light on another layer of the situation.
