Technology is shaping sports outcomes more than ever before. Hawk-Eye was created in 2001 by Paul Hawkins, a British businessman and aspiring professional cricketer. He holds a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from Durham University. Sony Europe acquired his company Hawk-Eye Innovations Ltd. in 2011 and is now used in more than 25 sports, including tennis, cricket, football and rugby. Although Hawk-Eye first appeared in a 2001 cricket match between England and Pakistan, several high-profile controversies hastened its adoption. In the world of tennis, one of the pivotal moments came during the 2004 US Open, when Serena Williams lost a controversial point to Jennifer Capriati.
