HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Debris has been removed after the fatal crash involving an 18-wheeler and a diesel fuel leak Wednesday morning, according to TranStar cameras.
The crash was first reported on I-10 near Eldridge at about 5 a.m
Police have closed all inside lanes near Dairy Ashford as the investigation continues, said Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Traffic in this area was seen backed up for miles near Kingsland Boulevard.
According to investigators, two people were confirmed dead at the scene after the accident also led to a fire in the car.
The 18-wheeler was traveling east and struck the driver of a gold Mitsubishi Galant, causing it to roll over and slide onto the highway, the Houston Police Department said in a statement.
The 18-wheeler then hit a barrier and overturned.
HCSO says both drivers were killed.
SkyEye13 photos from the scene showed the large truck turned on its side, and hazmat crews worked to clean up a diesel leak, likely from the truck. The passenger vehicle in question was also seen a distance away from the scene, sustaining severe damage.
Returning to the scene nearly six hours later, Skyeye13 noticed the truck had been moved upright and towed from the area. Officials then cleared the affected lanes, and traffic flow was restored just after lunchtime.
