Houston Fire Department and Texas A&M Forestry Service maintaining grass fire near I-10 and Eldridge Parkway

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – The Houston Fire Department said it will continue to monitor the fire near the Addicks Reservoir that broke out Sunday morning.

The fire is contained near I-10 and Eldridge Parkway, south of Bear Creek Park.

Officials said there is no risk of this fire spreading and that it is currently 99% contained.

Authorities said 105 acres of Addicks Reservoir burned in that grass fire. HFD said they don’t know the cause yet, but arson investigators will look into that.

HFD Captain Bo Moreno said crews were called to the area to check for smoke Sunday morning.

“When units arrived, they saw smoke coming out here,” Capt. Moreno said.

Cpt. Because of the low temperatures, the smoke was low, so they couldn’t find the fire right away, Moreno said. When they finally found him later that morning, Capt. Moreno said he was about 100 yards from the wooded area.

“There was no way to drive the vehicle, and there was no way to attach hoses to it,” Capt. Moreno said.

So, he said crews handled this differently and let the fire get to them instead.

“We start smaller fires that we know we can control and burn whatever will burn,” Capt. Moreno said. “This way, when the bulk of the fire reaches us, there is nothing left to burn.”

HFD said crews will monitor the fire until it is completely extinguished, which could take another day or two.

“This smoke has been cleared out of here now. The air quality has improved,” Capt. Moreno said. “There is no threat to citizens. There is no danger of this spreading.”

Cpt. Moreno wanted to stress that this was not a controlled burn.

On Monday morning, ABC13’s SkyEye flew over the area, where fog shrouded the flames.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages the property, Houston fire officials said.

Officials reported no injuries or deaths and said they would continue to monitor air quality.
