(KRON) – An Oakland man was arrested in a shooting Thursday on Interstate 24, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The suspect, 57-year-old Carlos Ray Thomas, allegedly shot at several cars while driving on Interstate 24 near the Caldecott Tunnel at approximately 3:45 p.m. He was taken into custody after he crashed his car into a center divider while driving south on Interstate 680 near Walnut Creek.
“Responding officers learned that the victim’s vehicle had been hit by drive-by gunfire,” the CHP said. “The victim was not injured and stopped near the scene. Two additional victims contacted CHP after arriving at their homes to report that their vehicles had also been shot at.”
After the accident, Thomas got out of his car and tried to flee the scene, but officers chased him, the CHP said. Investigators also found and seized a gun during the arrest.
All eastbound lanes of Interstate 24 were diverted to Interstate 13 at 4:30 p.m. while authorities investigated the shooting. During the investigation, officers found a stray cat in the Caldecott Tunnel, which was later adopted by the family of a CHP officer, CHP told KRON4. The lanes were reopened at seven in the evening
Thomas was booked into Santa Rita Jail on multiple felony charges, including attempted murder and drive-by shooting.
