SOUTHERN COLORADO (KXRM) – The Custer County Sheriff’s Office said on the morning of Tuesday, October 14, an armed carjacking in Silver Cliff turned into a multi-county crime spree.
According to CCSO, deputies responded Tuesday morning after a suspect used a gun to steal an SUV from a person at a dog park in Silver Cliff. As a precaution, Custer County Schools were placed on lockdown following the incident.
The stolen vehicle was soon found in Cañon City and was later involved in a pursuit on Interstate 50 near the intersection with Interstate 67. The Colorado State Patrol spotted the suspect traveling north on Interstate 115 at a high rate of speed before the stolen vehicle was later abandoned in Colorado Springs, the sheriff’s office said.
The Custer County Sheriff’s Office said initial reports indicate the suspect committed one or two additional carjackings in Colorado Springs and shot one or more times during the crime spree. The suspect is also accused of pointing a gun at Colorado Department of Transportation workers.
The Colorado Springs Police Department chased the suspect before they were finally arrested. Multiple law enforcement agencies coordinate to determine the complete sequence of events in each jurisdiction.
CCSO said the suspect has been identified as a minor, and his name will not be released at this time. There is no ongoing risk to the community.
