The term most used to describe Knicks fans is “long suffering”.
One Chicago sports talk radio host has a new suggestion.
“I think Knicks fans are the most obnoxious fans in American sports,” Lawrence Holmes declared while co-hosting Matt Spiegel on their show 104.3 The Score on Friday afternoon.
It’s a rich story coming from Chicago, a city whose NBA team caused Knicks fans so much pain in the 1990s.
Of course, the Bulls haven’t been back to the NBA Finals since the last of Michael Jordan’s six titles in 1998, and they’re in a state of irrelevance, so they have some struggles of their own.
Spiegel immediately disagreed with Holmes.
“Wow, I don’t think that’s true,” he said.
Spiegel called MLB’s Cardinals “most obnoxious,” which makes sense given the rivalry between the Cubs and Cardinals.
“The St. Louis Cardinals actually have some state-of-the-art jewelry that supports some of their piety,” Holmes said. “But Knicks fans, you haven’t won anything since the Ford administration.”
“Good,” Holmes said when told that the Knicks had more losses than any team in the NBA in the 21st century entering the 2021 season.
“I hope to get four more,” he added.
Perhaps feeling like he was making headlines — like this one — in New York, Holmes said, “I can’t wait for this game to be played on WFAN when they lose in six (games).”
Then, the entire crew of the show broke into what sounded like an imitation of Joe Beningo, pointing out how their show once borrowed WFAN’s studios for some reason.
Finally, the show’s producer mentioned the Cowboys, who would certainly be a popular choice in a poll for the most obnoxious fans given their nickname “America’s Team” and their Bulls-style drought of not having won a championship since 1995. Yankees fans might get ahead of Knicks fans, too.
