Just like last year’s Grand Slams, the 2026 Australian Open is once again being dominated by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as the tennis world enters its second week. Amid their dominance, former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash has expressed concern that these two players have too much control over the sport.
Despite his worries, Cash has one name that he thinks can shake things up for the world’s top two players.
Pat Cash’s Star Who Could Challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
Alcaraz and Sinner have emerged as the two strongest players on the men’s tennis circuit right now. They have won the last eight Grand Slam titles between them since 2024.
They’ve also met each other in the finals of three straight Grand Slams, at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open in 2025. At Melbourne Park, both are the favorites to make it to the finals, and it seems like no one else can really challenge them.
However, Cash told Wide World of Sports radio that the Kazakh champion, Alexander Bublik, is the player who can disrupt the Grand Slam scene. “Bublik is the guy to look for. He’s the guy that can upset one of them (Alcaraz or Sinner). I don’t know if he can do it back-to-back,” said the 1987 Wimbledon Champion.

Comparing Bublik with Australian Champion Nick Kyrgios, Cash said, “Six foot five with all the talent in the world. They sort of call him the Eastern Bloc Nick Kyrgios – that’s the sort of way that he plays. He’s got flair, I think he’s probably a bit more focused than Nick.”
“So I think he’s got a chance of upsetting those players. Like Nick did, he can come out and have a great match. Don’t know if he can go all the way, like Nick. But he’s dangerous and he’s great to watch,” he concluded.
Bublik’s Meteoric Rise in 2025 and Australian Open Campaign
Bublik won four ATP titles in 2025, winning at Halle, Gstaad, Kitzbühel, and Hangzhou. He also reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, becoming the first Kazakhstani player to do so at a Grand Slam.
He started 2026 strong by winning the Hong Kong Open, beating Lorenzo Musetti in the final 7-6(2), 6-3 to win his ninth ATP title overall. That win pushed him into the top ten for the first time, making him the first Kazakhstani man to break into the top ten in tennis history.

The Australian Open has been special for Bublik at Melbourne Park. He beat Jenson Brooksby in round one, then took on Marton Fucsovics before heading into the third round. His next match against Tomás Martín Etcheverry was comparably tough, needing two tiebreaks, but Bublik ultimately won in straight sets again to reach the fourth round for the first time in Melbourne.
Next, he is set to face World No. 6 Alex de Minaur in the fourth round, with 40% chances of advancing to the quarterfinals according to PFSN’s exclusive interactive simulator. If he wins that match, he could face Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. If he gets past Alcaraz, he could meet Sinner in the final.
