A car carrying a family of three plunged into the Seekonk River in Rhode Island on Sunday evening, authorities said.
The vehicle entered the river near the boat ramp on Taft Street shortly before 7:30 p.m., Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said in a statement.
A passerby riding a motorcycle heard the car going into the water and tried to help, while another witness called 911, according to Goncalves.
Goncalves noted that first responders arrived within three minutes of the emergency call.

Recovery efforts resumed Monday, with Pawtucket police and fire personnel working alongside Rhode Island State Police and other state agencies to remove the vehicle from the river, Goncalves said.
She added: “Conditions are very difficult for diving teams due to the strong current and poor underwater visibility.”

The authorities did not reveal the identities or circumstances of the building’s occupants.
“We ask that you keep the family and loved ones in your prayers as first responders continue recovery efforts,” Goncalves said.
