The 2025 incident involving Mark Sanchez is set to go on trial in a few days. The former New York Jets quarterback was stabbed and rushed to the hospital hours before he was scheduled to call the Indianapolis Colts-Las Vegas Raiders game for FOX in Indianapolis, an assignment he ultimately did not fulfill.
The criminal battery trial has a pre-trial conference on July 8, but the outlook isn’t positive for Sanchez.
Mike Florio Suggests Mark Sanchez Should Look for a Plea Deal in Stabbing Case
Once more information became available, it was clear that the case’s outlook wasn’t going to paint Sanchez in a good light. The evidence reportedly includes more than 50 pieces of video, and it shows that the former quarterback allegedly assaulted 69-year-old truck driver Perry Tole after a confrontation over where Tole parked his truck.
The trial date was postponed multiple times, but it is now set to proceed. And NFL insider Mike Florio, a former attorney, believes the best thing that Sanchez can do is to get a plea deal, as the evidence is overwhelmingly against him. He spoke about it on “Pro Football Talk”:
“There’s always a chance of a plea deal, and I’ll be somewhat surprised if the case does go to trial,” Florio said. “I think the evidence is sufficiently clear that Sanchez would be wise to work out a deal. Sometimes the evidence is so clear that the prosecution doesn’t want to do a deal.”
“Sanchez should take a deal,” Florio continued. “If I’m the prosecutor, I don’t know if I want to do a deal. And it could be that the prosecutor, encouraged by the strength of the case, wants too much from Sanchez’s perspective. At a certain point, let’s just roll the dice. Maybe we get lucky. Maybe we get a jury that is either hung or we get an acquittal, or something happens that avoids the worst-case scenario. But it’s never looked good for Sanchez from the moment that the facts became publicly available.”

Sanchez has never returned to the booth since the incident. Fox Sports severed ties with the analyst after details of the incident became clear, and Drew Brees was hired by the network to replace him.
Sanchez was released from the hospital days after the stabbing, and he has been mostly away from the media as he dealt with the fallout of the incident. Getting a plea deal, as Florio noted, could be the best-case outcome from a sad situation.
