Boston and two other cities in Massachusetts entered the list, along with the capital of Rhode Island.
For the second year in a row, Boston has been ranked as the most crash-prone city in the United States, according to a new report from Allstate.
Insurance company America’s Best Drivers 2026 Report It ranked the 200 largest U.S. cities based on auto insurance claims data, finding that Boston drivers spend an average of just 3.7 years between collisions, the shortest period in the country. The report estimates that drivers in Boston are approximately 189% more likely to be involved in traffic accidents than the national average.
This high crash rate results in higher repair and insurance costs for drivers in Boston, according to Allstate.
Two other Massachusetts cities dominated the low end of the rankings. Worcester ranked fourth from the bottom, or 197th overall, with drivers averaging about 5.14 years between crashes, while Springfield ranked fifth from the bottom, or 196th, with an average of 5.18 years between crashes.
Providence, Rhode Island, also ranked among the 10 most dangerous cities for drivers in the country, ranking 194th overall with an average of 5.87 years between collisions.
Brownsville, Texas, has once again been named the safest city for drivers in the country, with motorists spending nearly 15 years between collisions, nearly four times longer than drivers in Boston.
The annual report, now in its 18th year, analyzed Allstate property damage claims filed between January 2023 and December 2024 to compare crash trends in the nation’s most populous cities. The rankings were based on how often drivers were involved in crashes resulting in property damage claims.
The insurer says its policies represent nearly 10% of auto insurance policies in the United States, providing what it describes as a “broad snapshot of national driving trends across the country.”
This year’s report also included anonymized data from Allstate’s Drivewise mobile app to highlight behaviors associated with crash risk, such as speeding, hard braking, phone use while driving, and night driving.
The results revealed that Boston was among the cities with the highest rates of phone use behind the wheel.
Where people drive affects their crash risk, but their driving habits play an equally important role, said Laura Hoffman, vice president of automotive design and information technology at Allstate.
“You don’t have to fix your driving habits to make a difference,” Hoffman said. “Simple steps like slowing down, staying focused, and giving yourself space can go a long way in helping reduce your risk.”
A state Department of Transportation spokesman said Boston Globe The agency “prioritizes safety on all roads and works with all municipalities to meet the needs of road users by implementing systemic safety countermeasures and addressing high-crash sites.”
