Manchester United have completed the signing of Mexico international Rebeca Bernal from Washington Spirit.
The 29-year-old joins on a three-year contract on a deal believed to be worth up to £300,000.
She can play in the centre of either defence or midfield and will become the first Mexican to feature in the Women’s Super League.
“I have experienced a lot of special moments in my career and the privilege of representing Manchester United is truly incredible,” said Bernal.
“It is clear that I am joining a great environment. Eva [Olid] is an excellent coach and you can see the determination throughout the whole squad to be successful.
“I cannot wait to begin this new chapter, to give everything and bring all of my experience and passion to help push the team achieve our ambitions.”
Bernal made 223 appearances for CF Monterrey before joining Washington Spirit, where she helped them to win the Challenge Cup.
The Mexico captain has also made 78 appearances for her country, scoring nine goals, including the winner in the 2023 Pan American Games women’s football final as they beat Chile to claim the title for the first time.
United’s director of women’s football Matt Johnson said: “Rebeca is an outstanding player who brings quality, leadership and experience to our young, exciting squad.
“She possesses the required determination to succeed and winning mentality to thrive at Manchester United.”
Bernal becomes United’s fourth signing this summer, joining defender Andrea Medina, goalkeeper Janina Leitzig and Sweden winger Monica Jusu Bah.
The WSL transfer window shuts on Thursday (23:00 BST), while United start their campaign under new manager Eva Olid at London City Lionesses on Friday (19:00 BST).
