An off-duty senior NYPD officer allegedly fired an accidental stray bullet during an altercation with his daughter’s boyfriend in Rockland County on Sunday, according to law enforcement sources.
Assistant Commander Benjamin Gurley, who oversees Bronx North Command, was involved in a physical altercation with a man accused of harassing his daughter in Haverstraw, New York, late Sunday night, sources told The Washington Post.
According to sources, the man is dating Gurley’s daughter.
During the heated confrontation, the police chief allegedly fired an accidental shot.
No one was injured, but Gurley injured his arm during the fight and will wear a sling while he heals, sources said.
The Haverstraw Police Department responded to the shooting and is leading the investigation. The NYPD’s Force Investigations Division and Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating the incident separately.
Sources told… New York Daily News Gurley’s duty status was not affected by the accidental shooting.
Gurley joined the NYPD as a deputy chief in 2000. He held the same position until he was promoted to assistant chief in 2023, according to his LinkedIn.
Last February, the top cop told The Washington Post that it was frustrating to see two decades go by without a promotion in sight.
“If you try too hard and see people outperforming you, you will feel frustrated and may not want to work as hard,” he said. “This has stabilized a lot over the last couple of years.”
The father of three is a first-generation cop born and raised in the Bronx.
Haverstraw is located just 30 miles north of the Bronx.
