In a trial filing, federal prosecutors said 30-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht was distraught over his relationship with a former co-worker and was angry that he had no plans for New Year’s Eve.
Many of Rinderknecht’s Uber passengers that night described him as angry, driving erratically and yelling about his anger at the world.
According to the warrant, prosecutors say Rinderknecht was fixated on Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and was obsessed with fire.
Rinderknecht’s trial is expected to begin on June 8. Prosecutors expect to call up to 50 witnesses and estimate the proceedings could take up to 10 days.
In November 2025, a judge ruled that Rinderknecht must remain in prison while awaiting trial.
US Judge Rosella A. denied… Oliver bailed for Rinderknecht, saying he should remain in custody because of his mental health and the distress he has caused his sister and her family.
Rinderknecht’s father testified in support of his release, denying that his son had mental health problems.
If convicted on all charges, Rinderknecht faces up to 45 years in federal prison.
