Armed suspect dead after officer-involved shooting on Glenmont Drive in Gulfton area in southwest Houston, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – An armed suspect was killed after being shot by a police officer in the Gulfton area of ​​southwest Houston on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers received a call at 3:52 p.m. Wednesday about a man walking westbound in the 5800 block of Glenmont Drive carrying a black handgun inside a pink wallet.

An officer arrived at the scene five minutes later and saw the man carrying the wallet in Glenmont, authorities said. The officer then got out of his car and verbally ordered the man to put the wallet down, officials said.

After ignoring multiple instructions from the officer to put the wallet away, the man pulled the gun from the wallet and pointed it at the officer, investigators said.

The officer then pulled out his gun and began shooting at the suspect, HPD said, adding that the suspect then shot back at the officer. Investigators said there were multiple gunshots fired back and forth between the two men, as the officer ducked behind the patrol car for cover.

The suspect then entered a nearby apartment complex, and the officer chased him and fired more shots, police said. Officials said the suspect fired at the officer several times.

When paramedics later arrived at the scene, they rendered aid to the suspect, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.

The officer involved was shot but was not sent to the hospital and is expected to be okay, HPD said.

Nearby is a high school and a K-8 charter school. ABC13 spoke with Anna Trejo, who said she made the initial 911 call, expressing concern because of the nearby schools.

“He was walking around with a gun,” Trejo said. “There were kids coming out of school, and he was staring at the kids. There was a bus dropping kids off from school whenever everything happened.”

SkyEye was overhead, witnessing a heavy police presence and first responders at the scene.

SkyEye was over the scene as crews responded to an officer-involved shooting on Glenmont Drive.
