Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders has been one of the most controversial players of the 2025 NFL season. It isn’t surprising, given that his father, Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders, also commanded a lot of attention.
That’s why whenever Deion is on hand for a game, it draws a lot of attention from fans.
How Has Deion Sanders Supported His Son Sheduer Sanders Since He Was Drafted by the Browns?
“Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.” That’s what Deion said to the Browns front office on a phone call, just after they picked up his son, Shedeur Sanders, in the 5th round of the 2025 NFL Draft. And from that point, the rookie quarterback has been on a roller coaster ride in Cleveland.
From not knowing if he would ever start in the 2025 season, to finding a way through Dillon Gabriel and Joe Flacco, to taking his first NFL shot against the Las Vegas Raiders, Sanders took a big jump. And his biggest supporter in this NFL journey is none other than his Hall of Fame dad.
The former Colorado Buffaloes starting quarterback is now starting for Cleveland with head coach Kevin Stefanski backing him. Shedeur’s first start came in Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders, and he helped them pull off a 24-10 win.
Unfortunately, despite some solid stats and heroic efforts, the Browns lost the next three games. Despite the mixed results, the 23-year-old QB is starting against the Buffalo Bills in Week 16. And no doubt, Deion is there to support his son.
Though the Browns are out of playoff contention, fans are expecting something worthwhile might happen in Cleveland. The Browns’ head coach position has become the focal point of fans’ discussion on social media after the former Dallas Cowboys legend entered Huntington Bank Field for the Dawg Paund crowd on Sunday, Dec. 21.
Fans Speculate Deion Sanders’ Public Backing of Shedeur Could Signal Browns Coaching Interest
After “ESPN Cleveland” posted a picture of the Colorado HC on Dec. 21, writing, “Coach Prime in the building to watch Shedeur Sanders,” fans did not miss connecting the dots with speculations.
is that the next coach of the browns?

One fan asked a legitimate question through a comment, writing, “Is that the next coach of the Browns?” While another fan added, “You honestly has to be there. Last week, Sanders was not as good in the first game without his father available.”

In the last matchup with the Bears, Shedeur only completed 18 out of 35 passes for 177 yards, while scoring zero touchdowns against three interceptions. And after that performance, Deion sent a strong message, saying, “Shedeur knows the game, and he knows it’s about taking the licks and getting back up. He didn’t play his best today, but trust me, he’ll be out here laughing about it next week.”
This comment also underscores the underlying question from fans: Why isn’t Deion coaching Shedeur? Many believe it will be much more comfortable for the rookie QB.

While Deion going from college coach to Browns head coach, the rumor mill was fueled by a recent meeting. On Dec. 7, when Deion met with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, speculation about the legendary NFL DB’s future in Cleveland began.
Browns Owner’s Brief Exchange With Deion Sanders Signals Bigger NFL Implications
The Browns’ owner, Haslam, shared a brief but noticeable exchange with Deion. And it quickly caught the attention of fans. Greeting Sanders warmly, Haslam said, “It’s an honor to see you,” then asked how he was feeling and added, “We’re glad to have you.”
Haslam also expressed hope that No. 12 would “play well today,” a comment directed at Shedeur. He delivered a strong performance despite his team coming up short in a tough loss. The video of their conversation went viral, and fans discussed the college football coach’s strong ties to the Browns’ owner.
As NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Dec. 20, “No decisions have been made on the future of Kevin Stefanski, the two-time NFL Coach of the Year,” it appears Deion is in the conversation this offseason.
