74yo bicyclist killed in collision with dump truck on Route 6

A 74-year-old bicyclist was killed in a crash with a dump truck on Route 6 in Dartmouth Monday afternoon, officials said.

Shortly before noon, first responders were called to State Route 832 near the west side of Route 6, where they found a dump truck parked on the right side of the road, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn’s office said in a news release.

The investigation revealed that the dump truck and a 74-year-old female cyclist collided, Quinn said. Officials did not determine the direction in which he was heading or what led to the collision.

Authorities said the bike driver, whose identity has not been revealed, died at the scene.

Quinn noted that the truck driver remained at the scene and was “cooperating with police.” Officials did not say whether any charges or citations were expected.

Massachusetts State Police and Dartmouth police are investigating the incident, authorities said.

The fatal collision comes less than a week after another biker was killed in Massachusetts.

Last Thursday, 36-year-old Louisa Judge, a Boston transportation planner and bicycle safety advocate, was struck by a truck driver while riding on Tremont Street near Roxbury Crossing on Mission Hill. Her death sparked renewed calls to improve bicycle and street safety in Boston.

Monday’s accident also comes on the heels of another fatal crash on Route 6. On Friday, Tristan Bedient, 34, of Acushnet, and Kate Aldrich, 51, of New Bedford, were killed in a two-vehicle crash near the Westport-Dartmouth city line.
