Streaming new movies
“The Long March” (2025)
Two Stephen King film adaptations have been released in the final months of 2025 about the ambulatory movement: the Edgar Wright remake of The Running Man, and The Long Walk, an adaptation of King’s 1979 novel of the same name. Both are set in a dystopian America where rivals fight to the death while the nation watches on television. “The Long Walk,” in which about 100 teens walk to their deaths until one remains, has the added benefit of a kind of “Stand By Me” chemistry between the contestants played by the likes of Cooper Hoffman and David Johnson.
How to watch: “The Long Walk” is Streaming on HBO Max.
“Hail Mary Project” (2026)
Although it doesn’t settle down quickly, in my opinion (read my review here), Ryan Gosling’s entertaining sci-fi adventure is one of the most entertaining films in recent memory. Based on the novel by “The Martian” author Andy Weir, “Project Hail Mary” finds the “Barbie” actor playing a high school science teacher who awakens from a coma in deep space, not knowing how he got there. As he slowly realizes, he is humanity’s last hope – a responsibility he is absolutely not ready to accept.
How to watch: “The Hail Mary Project” is Streaming on Prime Video.
“Sheep Detectives”
For a movie the whole family can enjoy, I recommend this fun mystery, in which a flock of talking sheep try to figure out how their shepherd, George (Hugh Jackman), ended up dead. The local police officer believes that George has been poisoned, but since George has a habit of reciting murder secrets to his flock, these sheep—voiced by the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Regina Hall, and Patrick Stewart—will not succumb to the herd mentality.
How to watch: “The Sheep Detectives” is streaming on Prime Video.
More new streaming movies: “Enola Holmes 3” (Netflix); “The Mummy of Lee Cronin” (HBO Max); “The man will burn” (HBO Max); “Reminder of it” (peacock);
Streaming new TV shows
‘“Five star weekend getaway”
One of the biggest TV shows to debut this week was filmed on Nantucket: Beach read Queen Elin Hilderbrand’s new series, “The Five-Star Weekend,” which stars Jennifer Garner as a celebrity chef trying to cope with the death of her husband and her subsequent (very public) nervous breakdown. By gathering her best friends (Regina Hall, Chloe Sevigny, Darcey Carden, and Gemma Chan) for a long weekend on the island, Hollis hopes to find a little peace. Although there are some laughs with this group, there is a sad emotional depth to the show as well.
How to watch: “Five Star Weekend” is They flock to the peacock.
“Little House on the Prairie”
If you’ve had a stressful week, Netflix’s adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical tale of a family living on a farm in the late 1800s is just the ticket. Following many of the same beats as TV series from the 1970s and 1980s, the story of the Ingalls family and their efforts to break into the American West is wholesome, uncomplicated, and fun. Sometimes, that’s all you really need for weekend viewing.
How to watch: “Little House on the Prairie” is Streaming on Netflix.
More new streaming TV shows: “Behind Attraction” Season 3 (Disney+); “L” Season 1 (Prime Video); “Project Runway” Season 22 (Holo); “Silo” Season Three (Apple TV); “X-Men ’97” Season 2 (Disney+)
