2 suspects in shooting at Islamic Center of San Diego dead, police source says

San Diego, California– The two shooting suspects died Monday at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

This is according to a police source who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss further details.

Authorities previously said they believed several people had been shot, but did not release further details.

The San Diego Police Department said the threat had been “neutralized” after reports of an active shooter at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

Officer Anthony Carrasco said people reported several gunshots at the mosque, which is located about 9 miles north of downtown San Diego.

Officers responded to Eckstrom Street around 12 noon PT in the Claremont area and urged the public to avoid the area, according to the police department.

At least one person was killed in the incident, according to our affiliate station KGTV.

Aerial footage showed authorities escorting people from the scene, and also showed a line of school children holding hands as the area was evacuated.

The Islamic Center is the largest mosque in San Diego County, according to its website.

“We strongly condemn this horrific act of violence,” Tzhen Nizam, executive director of the San Diego chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this attack. No one should fear for their safety while attending prayer or studying in a primary school.”

The campus includes Al-Rashid School, which the website says offers courses in the Arabic language, Islamic studies, and the Holy Quran.

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said it has been briefed on the matter.

In New York City, the NYPD said there was “no known connection to New York City or specific threats to places of worship in the city,” but the department said it was increasing the deployment of officers in mosques “out of an abundance of caution.”
