2 arrested on DUI suspicion after 'brief barricade' in Wellington gas station parking lot

DENVER (KDVR) — A man and a woman were arrested in Wellington last week after the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said they were driving under the influence in a gas station parking lot and the man began setting up a short barricade in the car.

“There are no predictable days on patrol,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. “Our deputies approach every call with a problem-solving mentality and an unwavering focus on public safety.”

The incident occurred on October 21 at approximately 12:30 p.m. when witnesses at the gas station contacted law enforcement due to the woman’s “erratic and confrontational behavior,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Arriving deputies found the woman driving in the parking lot, and “when they contacted her, they learned she was under the influence of alcohol.”

They arrested her and asked the man who was in the car to get out as well.

He refused, according to the sheriff’s office, and shut the car off. Deputies also learned that he was also intoxicated.

The man started the car, prompting deputies to use “other methods” to prevent him from leaving.

The man was still uncooperative, and cops used a 40mm less-lethal launcher to fire a solid foam projectile to break the window, then pepper balls to force the man out of the car, according to the sheriff’s office.

“He prepared to run away but saw K9 Mav standing next to him and changed his mind,” the Sheriff’s Office said, then they took him into custody as well.

Both individuals were booked into the Larimer County Jail on multiple charges.
