Woman killed by ICE agent in Minneapolis was a mother of 3, poet and new to the city

The woman shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis on Wednesday is Renee Nicole McLean Goode, a 37-year-old mother of three who recently moved to Minnesota.

She was a US citizen born in Colorado and had apparently never been charged with anything law enforcement related other than a traffic ticket.

MacLean Goode described herself on her social media accounts as a “poet, writer, wife, and mother.” She said she was currently “testing out Minneapolis,” displaying a pride flag emoji on her Instagram account. A profile picture posted on Pinterest shows her smiling and holding a toddler on her cheek, along with posts about tattoos, hairstyles and home decorating.

McClain Good dropped her 6-year-old son off at school Wednesday and was driving home with her current partner when they encountered a group of ICE agents on a snow-covered street in Minneapolis, where they moved last year from Kansas City, Missouri, said her ex-husband, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear for their children’s safety.

A video taken by bystanders and posted on social media shows an officer approaching her car and demanding that she open the door and grab the handle. As it begins to move forward, another ICE officer standing in front of the car draws his weapon and immediately fires two shots at the car at point-blank range.

In another video filmed after the shooting, a distraught woman is seen sitting near the car, sobbing: “This is my wife, I don’t know what to do!”

Calls and messages to Macklin Good’s current partner received no response.

Trump administration officials portrayed McLean Goode as a domestic terrorist who tried to run over federal agents with her car. Her ex-husband said she was not an activist and that he had never known her to participate in a protest of any kind.

He described her as a devoted Christian who participated in youth mission trips to Northern Ireland when she was younger. She loved singing and participated in choir in high school and studied vocal performance in college.

She studied creative writing at Old Dominion University in Virginia, and won a 2020 award for one of her works, according to a post on the school’s English department Facebook page. She also hosted a podcast with her second husband, who died in 2023.

McLean Goode had a daughter and a son from her first marriage, who are now 15 and 12 years old. He was her 6-year-old son from her second marriage.

She was primarily a stay-at-home mother in recent years but previously worked as a dental assistant and at a credit union, her ex-husband said.

Her mother, Donna Junger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that the family was notified of the death late Wednesday morning.

“Rene was one of the nicest people I ever knew,” Junger told the newspaper. “She was very compassionate. She cared about people her whole life. She was loving, tolerant and compassionate. She was a wonderful human being.”

Junger did not respond to calls or messages from the AP.
