Aurora, Colorado (KDVR)-Dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the Aurora contract detention facility on Monday night, and called for the release of Janet Vzgura, a known lawyer in the field of immigration rights that have been resulted in American migration and beauty custody for six months.
Vizguerra gained national attention in 2017 after taking a haven in the Denver Church to avoid deportation. Since then, she has been an audio critic of the ice.
Supporters in the gathering claim that her continuous detention is politically driven.
“It is there because it is through its fighting and sanctuary, she made it clear to us that we can stand against the billion dollars industry that sets our society on my way to work,” said Miriam Ordus of the American Friends Service Committee.
Vizguerra spoke from inside the Aurora attachment via the phone and translator translator, addressed its supporters directly.
“For the first time, I feel weak. I feel my health is deteriorating. I am very worried about my family, and I need to go out with them. I need to go out with my community,” she said through a translator.
Vizguerra came for the first time to the United States from Mexico in 1997. Ice says it was reported in Mexico in 2012 and was illegally returned the following year.
In 2017, the campus was taken in the Denver Church to avoid deportation. Since then, it has received several short -term removal residencies, which ended in February 2024, according to ICE. On March 17, she was arrested again and remained in the custody of the ice since then.
“This has continued for a long time,” said Laura Lestep, the main lawyer in Vizurara. “This has exceeded a reasonable time for a person who faces detention while he was actively playing his legal right to challenge the government’s action.”
The Legal Vizguerra team presented a new proposal on Monday in search of its release. Since she is being held for more than six months, her lawyers argue that the burden of proof is now on the government to justify the continued detention.
ICE did not respond to the request for comment, but he previously said: “Vizguerra is a foreigner convicted of Mexico and has a final deportation order issued by the federal immigration judge.”
Lester says that the government is expected to respond to the file in the next three weeks.
