Lowell police are investigating a fatal shooting at an apartment complex Friday afternoon, officials said.

The shooting happened shortly before 4 p.m. at a home on Pawtucket Street, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

Preliminary information indicates that the shooting came after a short altercation between two men who knew each other from the building, according to officials.

Both men were allegedly armed during the confrontation, according to the district attorney’s office.

One of the men suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

The second man remained at the scene. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
