Longhorns make big jump in AP Top 25 after Vanderbilt win

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas made a big jump in the Associated Press Top 25 after defeating former No. 9 Vanderbilt in a 34-31 thriller on Saturday at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.

The Longhorns jumped seven spots to No. 13 after the win, and the loss dropped the Commodores six spots to No. 15. The rise was tied with Utah and Oklahoma for the biggest gains in the poll. The Sooners beat Tennessee 33-27 to move up to 11th, and the Utes beat Cincinnati 45-14 to move up to 17th.

The top seven teams in the poll — Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon and Ole Miss — remained unchanged. BYU moved up two spots to eighth, with Texas Tech moving up four spots to ninth. Notre Dame rounded out the top ten.

Georgia Tech, Miami and Cincinnati all had big successes in the rankings, losing eight spots. The Yellow Jackets lost their first game of the season 48-36 to North Carolina State, and the Hurricanes stubbed their toe against SMU 26-20 in overtime.

The College Football Playoff committee will release its first set of rankings at 7:00 PM CT Tuesday on ESPN, giving fans a glimpse into how the 12-team CFP bracket is structured. The rankings will be updated four times after that, and then the category will be revealed on December 7.
