Locals hope to save beloved soul food restaurant in L.A.’s Crenshaw neighborhood

Locals are fighting to save a soul food restaurant that has served Los Angeles’ Crenshaw neighborhood for more than 30 years.

Dolan’s Soul Food Kitchen They’ve been cooking up classic dishes like fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, meatloaf, and more for loyal diners across SoCal.

Greg Dolan’s parents founded the company 50 years ago, and despite recent financial setbacks, Dolan said he hopes to continue his family’s legacy.

“I love coming to work,” Dolan said. “I love what I do. I love serving the community.”

Dolan’s loved ones said his restaurant was now in danger because of the poor business decision and advice he received.

“Force this [restaurant] To go into foreclosure because one of the transactions that occurred was advised by someone [Dulan] “He packaged that drug inside of him, which also put his business at risk,” said Sean Davis, a community advocate.

On Wednesday night, friends and community members held an emergency fundraiser to help Dolan raise money to save his family’s restaurant. Dolan had plans to expand the restaurant to the adjacent property, where he also wanted to open a cooking school.

Many patrons and longtime locals attended to support the cause, including actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish. Haddish, a Crenshaw native, has promised to match all donations received.

“I love chicken, I love vegetables, I love banana pudding,” Haddish told KTLA. “It’s a pleasure to see the community showing up here and there people I used to run the streets with in the 20th century. It’s like a little reunion. It’s an honor and a privilege to stand up for a company that takes care of us, for me and for my family.”

Dolan said he is very grateful for the support he has received.

“The community wanted to do this for me,” Dolan said. “I was hesitant. I’m a very private person and I didn’t want to go public with it. They wanted to do it, so I embraced it, overwhelmed with emotion.”

“For decades, Dolan’s has nourished our souls — not just with food, but with love, community and consistency,” Haddish said. “We cannot let this black-owned establishment disappear. I am calling on everyone who has had a plate from Dolan’s to come out and show love.”
