DENVER (KDVR) — With SNAP benefits suspended in November, Colorado food banks and pantries may need donations from the community — here’s how you can help.
Recipients of federal food aid nationwide, including more than 600,000 Coloradans, will not receive their benefits in November.
The USDA posted a notice on its website that benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will not be distributed on November 1 due to the federal government shutdown.
What does this mean for SNAP recipients?
The suspension of benefits will affect SNAP recipients nationwide, including more than 600,000 Coloradans, half of whom are children.
Some states are warning SNAP recipients to prepare to suspend benefits. According to the Associated Press, Arkansas and Oklahoma advise SNAP recipients to identify food pantries and other organizations that help provide food.
However, in Colorado, Gov. Jared Polis has made two requests to help recipients of federal benefits during the federal government shutdown, for up to $10 million to support food banks and food pantries.
On Friday, uncertainty began as to which states would temporarily shoulder the cost of federal benefits during the shutdown, as a USDA memo said they would not receive reimbursement.
The memo prompted nearly two dozen state attorneys, including Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, to write a letter to the USDA seeking clarification. As of Monday, there is no clear answer on whether or not those states will receive compensation.
How can you help?
Salvation Army pantries in the Denver metro area told FOX31’s Ashley Michels they’ve already seen an increase in people needing help, even having to turn away families after supplies were exhausted.
Although SNAP benefits have been suspended, there are still ways to donate. Food banks and food pantries ask the community for donations such as canned goods, dry food, or cash donations.
