Iowa revokes license of schools superintendent arrested by ICE, saying he is in US illegally

Iowa, Iowa (AP) – Government Agency canceled the professional licensing of the leader of the largest school region in Iowa on Monday, days after Federal agents arrested him on accusations that he was living and working in the country illegally.

In a letter to the Director of De Mine Public Schools, the Council of Educational Expatriates in Iwas said it is not qualified to hold a license because you “no longer have a legal presence in the United States.”

American immigration and customs agents were detained on Friday, saying that he was undergoing the final removal of the immigration judge in May 2024. He is being held in Iowa prison.

Ice said that Roberts escaped after the traffic stopped in De Mine, and that he was arrested with the help of the Iowa state. The agency said that Roberts, 54, had a loaded pistol in his car, a hunting knife and $ 3,000 in cash upon arrest.

De Moine School officials said they did not know anything about Roberts illegally. They said that he signed a model verified that he was a citizen when he was appointed in 2023 and presented a driver’s license and a social guarantee card to verify his eligibility.

The school council voted 6-0 on Monday evening to put Roberts on an unpaid vacation from its job, whose annual salary is 286,716 dollars. His contract, which voted at the Board of Directors to extend in May until June 30, 2028, requires that the state certificate to work as the supervisor.

The Chairman of the Board Jackie Norris said that the province received a notice on Monday afternoon from the Ministry of Internal Security that Roberts had not been corrected to work in the country, and a copy of the removal order issued by the Ministry of Justice.

Norris said that the board of directors will give Roberts’s lawyer until Tuesday to challenge these facts, and would move to shoot him.

“We need to understand what happened and why,” she said.

Roberts’s lawyer, Alfredo Parish, did not respond to the messages seeking to comment.

The area, which includes more than 30,000 students and about 5,000 employees, said that Roberts had been identified by Roberts as a job candidate by a search company and that a “comprehensive background examination” has been completed as part of the operation.

The State Council, which granted Roberts a license to work as a supervisor, said the operation included rear checks by the state police and the FBI. The Ministry of Education in Iowa said that the responsibility of the educational area is to verify the eligibility of employees to work, and that it will be achieved in the boycott practices.

The arrest was shocked in an area that was known to be a repeated presence in societal events and the hero of students during his term for two years. Roberts has been in the field of education for the past two decades, and worked as a supervisor in Pennsylvania before his appointment in Iowa.

The school council was placed on a paid vacation during a short private meeting on Saturday, but he decided to cut off his salary on Monday evening after a 90 -minute session. The council appointed the district director Matt Smith to work as a temporary supervisor.

Norris said that De Mine’s students met Roberts and “the enthusiasm that brought him to the semester”, and they were afraid and worried about his arrest. Critics called for stopping the “hateful speech addressed to our region” to reduce the impact on education.

Norris said that the provincial officials were shocked when they learned that Roberts claimed that he was carrying a weapon in a school vehicle, which would violate politics.

Ice said he had asked the alcohol, tobacco office, firearms and explosives to investigate how Roberts obtained the pistol. People in the country are illegally qualified to possess firearms. Roberts had the history of arms ownership, and was martyred in 2021 in Pennsylvania and a fine of $ 100 to store a hunting rifle loaded in his car.

Ice claimed that Roberts had a separate arms charge, pending dating back to February 2020, but he did not provide more details. Media representatives did not respond to inquiries about the claim on Monday.

American MP Zach Nun, a Republican representing the De Mawin region in Congress, wrote to ICE on Saturday asking for records related to the case. He said he was anxious about the conditions of detention.

“At the same time, it is important for our community to create a clearly verified timetable and to confirm that ICE enforcement procedures that involve a large public employee were backed by appropriate documents,” he wrote.
