A 22-year-old man died after being shot by Westminster police during a confrontation at his home late Monday afternoon, authorities said.
The man allegedly threatened police with a knife after they entered his residence on South Ashburnham Road about 4:40 p.m. to serve an arrest warrant, police said. Press release from the police department.
“During this interaction, the suspect picked up a large knife and moved toward the officers,” police said. “The officers fired their department-issued firearms and struck the individual.”
The statement indicated that after providing medical aid at the scene, responders transported the man to a local hospital. He was then transported to a hospital in the Worcester area, where he was pronounced dead.
There were no physical injuries to any Westminster officers as a result of the incident. All of the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
State Police investigators assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and Westminster Police are leading the investigation.
The authorities did not reveal the man’s name or further details about his arrest warrant.
